Milford Sound in August 2025: Our Fly-Cruise-Fly Adventure

Milford Sound is one of those places that feels almost unreal, and visiting in August made it even more special. Winter in New Zealand comes with its challenges, but it also brings crisp skies, dramatic contrasts, and fewer crowds.

One of the first things we learned is that the planes to Milford Sound don’t operate every day of the year—flights depend heavily on the weather. Some weeks they fly daily, and some weeks only once. Timing can be tricky, so we felt incredibly lucky that our Fly-Cruise-Fly option was available during our stay.

Why We Chose Fly-Cruise-Fly

We didn’t want to face a 4-hour drive in unpredictable winter conditions. Roads can be icy, and you never know how the weather will shift. Plus, a return trip by car takes 7–8 hours, which is a long day just for a viewpoint.

We almost booked the Coach-Cruise-Fly, which lets you take the scenic coach in the morning and fly back for incredible aerial views. We met someone on our return flight who did this, and she loved it. But it’s more expensive than Fly-Cruise-Fly, and since we had already driven to Glenorchy the previous day (with its amazing viewpoints), we didn’t feel like we were missing out. Especially knowing that we’d also be heading to Mount Cook for two nights!

In the end, Fly-Cruise-Fly was the best decision ever. We’d read reviews where people said the price made them hesitate, but everyone agreed it was worth it—and we couldn’t agree more.

The Flight & Cruise Experience

The moment we took off, we knew we made the right choice. The views are breathtaking, and the flights there and back follow different routes, so you get two unique perspectives. We even experienced a weather shift: starting with cloudy skies near Queenstown and returning under bright sunshine.

My husband had the chance to sit as co-pilot, which was an unforgettable highlight for him. The small plane was modern, the windows were spotless (perfect for photos and videos), and it felt so smooth.

The cruise itself was relaxing, though I admit the emotions were bigger for me on the flight than on the water. We’ve been on the ocean plenty of times, so I almost would have preferred a shorter cruise. Still, it was great to enjoy a warm drink inside when the chill set in.

Pro tip: bring hats, gloves, and a scarf if you’re traveling in winter. The sunshine makes for stunning views, but it can also be harsh for photos when heading out toward the sea. On the way back, we went inside to warm up as the shade and wind picked up. Thankfully, the large, clear windows gave us great views without needing to stay outside.

Weather, Timing & Tips

We were very lucky—no rain and no big splashes from waterfalls during our cruise. The only downside was the wait time for the boat. We had almost an hour before boarding, just enough for a bathroom break, snacks, and bundling up against the chill.

Overall, the day felt smooth and never rushed. The shorter travel time compared to driving or taking the coach made all the difference.

Final Thoughts

Milford Sound in August is pure magic, and the Fly-Cruise-Fly option turned out to be the perfect choice for us. It’s not cheap, but it’s an experience we’ll never forget—and one we’d recommend to anyone visiting in winter.

Between the dramatic flight paths, the calm cruise, and the peacefulness of visiting in the off-season, it was one of the highlights of our South Island adventure.

This is one of those places that’s even better than the postcards.
